Dorothy Jean Campbell, age 85, of Grand Rapids, MI, formerly of Alsip, IL passed away peacefully, Saturday, May 25, 2024, at her residence.

She was born November 10, 1938, in Chicago, IL to her loving parents Arthur and Eleanor (Peters) Kempf.

She married the love of her life, Howard C. Campbell, wedded on May 23, 1959.

She was the beloved mother of Scott D. (Dawn) Campbell, Sheri L. Gosnell (deceased Steve), Steven C. (Betsy) Campbell

She was the devoted grandmother of Grant (Caitie) Campbell, Steven Gosnell, Christie Campbell (fiance, Bobby Driskill), Samantha Gosnell, Michael (Julia) Gosnell and Amelia Campbell.

Most Loving great grandmother of Malcolm Campbell, Maeve Driskill, Juniper Gosnell.

Dearest sister of the late Elaine (Roy) Maurer, sister-in-law of the late Terry (Jan) Campbell, Jeri (Bill) Sandt. Numerous nieces and nephews were loved deeply.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Eleanor (Peters), sister, Elaine (Roy) Maurer, brother-in-law, Terry Campbell, and son-in-law, Steve Gosnell.

Dorothy graduated from Gage Park High School, Chicago, IL in 1956.   Once Graduated, she went on to secretarial school which led to her becoming an executive secretary for the Social Security Administration in Chicago.

Directly after marrying Howard, they moved to California where Dorothy and Howard were stationed as part of the Army, Dorothy then went on to work for the Department of the Army, where she received many accommodations during her tenure there.

After the Army they returned to Chicago where they started their family.

They resided in Merrionette Park, Alsip and Tinley Park, IL. 

Dorothy was a long time, charter member of the Lutheran Church of the Apostles, in Alsip. She served there in numerous roles, including 15 years as the Church secretary, ladies aid and active board member of the live Pageant of Christ’s birth.

Dorothy’s home was known as the home with an open heart.  All were welcome where wonderful food was plentiful.  She loved being surrounded by her friends, and family.

After moving to Tinley Park, they became members of St. Paul Lutheran of Matteson, IL.

Currently, she was a member of St. Mark Lutheran Church of Kentwood, MI.

This last week, Howard and Dorothy reached their 65th Wedding Anniversary milestone.

The family would like to thank all of those at Holland Home for their loving care of our precious Wife, Mother, and Grandmother.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Dorothy’s name may be given to Faith Hospice (faithhospicecare.org).

On Wednesday, May 29, 2024, Dorothy will lie in state for visitation from 11:00 am – 1:00 pm at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 1934- 52nd Street SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508, where the Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 pm.
