Andrew Gelder, age 88, of Kentwood, joined the heavenly choir on Thursday, April 4, 2024, where he met his Lord and Savior and was reunited with his family who went on before. Andy was born April 1, 1936, in Beaverdam, Michigan, the youngest of nine children born to Andrew and Martha (Ludema) Gelder. While serving in the US Navy, Andy married the love of his life, Madelon (Oosterhouse). Together they were blessed with eight children. Andy worked as a plumber for all of his working life and owned and operated Andy Gelder Plumbing & Heating. He enjoyed using his talents in mission work in many countries around the world. Andy loved his family deeply and was a very social person. He considered himself blessed by his legacy of a large and loving family including his wife of 67 years, Madelon; children, Kenneth Gelder and fiancée, Jan Passmore, Cynthia Andela and fiancé, Jim Jordan, Yvonne (Ken) Hogenes, Dawn (Neil) DeKievit, Marla (Randy) Bliss, Paula (Steve) DenHartigh, Gretchen (Wayne) Peters, Melodee (Dirk) Pikaart; 29 grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren; brothers-in-law, Rev. Jacob Heerema, Edward William (Corry) Oosterhouse; sister-in-law, Ina Oosterhouse. Andy was preceded in death by all eight of his siblings, and his daughter-in-law, Jan Gelder. The family will greet visitors on Tuesday, April 9, from 5 - 8 pm at Covenant Christian Reformed Church; 7171 Willard Ave. SE, and Wednesday, April 10, from 10 - 10:45 am prior to the funeral service beginning at 11 am, with his nephew, Rev. Alvern Gelder and his pastor, Rev. Jeff Vanderhooft officiating. The service will be live-streamed at https://covenant-crc.org/. Interment will be in Blain Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Byron Center Christian Schools. |
