Gordon Paul Oeverman

November 9, 1951 - March 16, 2024

Gordon Paul Oeverman, child of God, was called home to glory on Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the age of 72. Gord courageously fought an eight-week battle with a MRSA bacterial infection. Gord’s life reflected the joy and love of Jesus Christ, his Lord and Savior. Gord will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend. Born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Gord met Evelyn Gort while attending South Christian High School. They married after high school and settled in Caledonia, Michigan. Gord and Evie built a family of faith with their 4 children. Gord was a successful business owner, continuing the family trade of carpentry and home-building. Gord had an excellent sense of humor and excelled at many sports including baseball, basketball, hunting and golf. He played golf throughout his life and shared this passion with family and friends. He served his community and church as a cadet leader, consistory member, Promise Keepers attendee, and served on the board of Dutton Christian School. Over the years their family grew as his children expanded the family. In 2014, Gord lovingly supported and cared for Evie as she bravely fought pancreatic cancer and was ultimately called home. Gord passed his company, Oeverman Builders Inc., on to his youngest son Scott in 2016. Valuing hard work and staying physically active, Gord continued to frame houses part-time with his son Scott for the rest of his life. Finding love again, Gord met Debbie Blackport in 2016 and they were married in a small family ceremony in 2017. Together they shared a new life of traveling and adventure. They could often be found boating on Lake Michigan with their friends and family. Gordon is preceded in death by his wife, Evelyn Joyce Oeverman, of 40 years. Gord is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 7 years, Debbie Blackport. He is also survived by his amazing children, Jonathan (Cassandra) Oeverman; Lindsay (Dan) Buist, Katie (Nick) Heintz, and Scott (Kelsie) Oeverman; his stepsons, Ryan (Madhu) Blackport; Kyle (Tauna) Blackport. Also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Maya and Reuben Oeverman; Aiden and Henry Buist; Sophia and Jayce Heintz; Evan, Emallise, Ellie, and Eden Oeverman; step grandchildren, Colby, Brayden, Kamren, and Asha Blackport; Daxton, Pryor, Evie, Maklyn, and Rigsie Blackport. He is also survived by his siblings Sharon (Rob) Lindhout-Jonker, Den (Jan) Oeverman, Carol Hulst, Deb Anderson, Kris (Dave) Ver Burg, and Randy (Tarri) Oeverman. The family will greet visitors at Caledonia Christian Reformed Church, 9957 Cherry Valley SE, on Wednesday, March 20, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 pm. The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Thursday, March 21, at Caledonia CRC, with Rev. R. Scott Greenway officiating. A private interment service will be held in Dorr Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to South Christian High School.

We have been praying for Gord ever since he had his stroke when we were with Lindsay’s parents on the disaster relief team in Sarasota Florida. We didn’t meet Gord in person on this earth but felt we knew him through praying for him daily. We look forward to meeting him in eternity. We heard great things about him. He has left behind many great memories and he lead by example on how to live for Jesus. God bless you all as you learn to journey life without him. Doug and Romy Dokter
