Sherryl “Sherri” Lynn Nieboer was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Wednesday, October 10, 1962, to Harold and Charlene Mohr. She was the youngest of four children and the family’s only daughter. Sherri spent her childhood riding bikes around Grand Rapids and attending Grand Rapids Christian Schools.

She later met her first husband and became the proud mother of her two daughters, Melissa and Danielle, who quickly became the center of her world. Over the years, Sherri worked several jobs, including decades at Gentex and most notably at the Marathon gas station alongside her sister-in-law and dear friend, Jane. It was there that she met her husband, Tom, who pursued her for months before she finally agreed to go on a date with him. That date soon turned into a lifetime of love.

Sherri and Tom married and blended their families, creating a loving home with five children between them. Together they shared 28 wonderful years filled with camping trips, travel adventures, celebrating each of their children’s marriages, and cherishing their ten grandchildren, who were truly the light of Sherri’s life.

If Sherri wasn’t sitting courtside at a basketball or volleyball game, poolside at a swim meet, or in the bleachers cheering at a softball or baseball game, you could often find her with a book in her hand or in the kitchen canning fruits, vegetables, and homemade foods. Sherri served faithfully in various roles over the course of decades at Unity Reformed Church, sharing her gift of hospitality. She had a servant’s heart, loved caring for those around her, and rarely met a stranger who didn’t soon become a friend.

Sherri was preceded in death by her father, Harold; her oldest brother, Randy; her grandparents; several aunts and uncles; and her nephew, Joshua.

She will be lovingly remembered by her devoted husband, Tom; her children, Melissa (Eric) Behrenbrinker, Dustin (Angela) Nieboer, Heather (Nick) Smith, Danielle (Jason) Doyle, and Danielle (Kyle) Gummere; her cherished grandchildren, Gage, Allie, Esme, Paiton, Cody, Chase, Grant, Kent, Aiden, and JJ; her mother, Char Mohr; brothers, Dan (Jane) Mohr and Ron (Cher) Mohr; along with many nieces, nephews, and extended family.

A celebration of life for Sherri will take place at Unity Reformed Church, 4450 Poinsettia Ave. SE, Kentwood, 49508, on Friday, May 15, at 11:00 a.m., with visitation one hour prior to the service. Lunch will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Sherri to the Adult Congenital Heart Association or Mended Hearts.

Aftercare Information

  • Our care for the families we serve does not end when the service is over.  In addition to offering assistance with social security, veteran’s benefits, and life insurance claims, we also contact each family within the weeks following the loss of a loved one to make sure all of their needs are being met.  There are many details that need to be attended to, and the process can seem overwhelming.  It is our desire to make sure each family receives the guidance needed to make that process as smooth as possible.
  • Because each family we serve has a unique set of circumstances, each family’s needs following the death of a loved one is also unique.  Our aftercare coordinator will be able to provide contact information for the various grief support resources that will best meet the individual’s need.
