John Fikkert, age 84, of Wyoming MI, went to be with his Lord on Friday, March 13, 2026. John and his family immigrated to the United States from the Netherlands when he was ten years old. John would later graduate from Calvin College with a degree in music education. He later received a master's degree in music from Michigan State University. His first job was teaching music and Bible at Seymour Christian School for four years and spent the rest of his career at the Jenison Public Schools teaching K-12. One of his greatest joys at the High School was producing musicals. He taught the music, the acting, and also had to put the costumes and the set together. John played the piano and organ at Burton Height CRC and Bethany URC. He led choirs at Zion Reformed Church and Godwin Heights CRC. John had a generous heart that was expressed in his caring for people by offering help and humor in whatever way he could. The only thing he loved more than his family and his music was his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. His parents, Henry and Gezeina Fikkert preceded him in death. John is survived by his sister, Angela (Bill) Hoeksema; nephew, Jason (Clarita) Hoeksema; and many cousins and friends. The family will greet visitors on Wednesday, March 18 from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street SE. Grand Rapids, and on Thursday, March 19 from 10-11 am at Bethany United Reformed Church, 5401 Byron Center Ave. SW, Wyoming, MI. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday March 19, 2026, with Rev. Eric Van Der Molen officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Contributions in memory of John may be made to Bethany URC or the Holland Home Residence Assistance Fund. |

As a mentor, he gave his time generously, always willing to listen, guide, and support. He believed deeply in the potential of every young person and worked tirelessly to help them discover it. His passion for music was matched only by his love for those he taught.
Mr. Fikkert’s legacy lives on in the lives he shaped, the confidence he built, and the music that continues to echo because of him. He will never be forgotten.
