Brian Lee Herweyer, of Alto, MI, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 64 years old, in his home surrounded by his wife and children. For six months Brian bravely battled cancer in his brain and body, never wavering in faith, trusting in the plans God had for him. Brian was born and raised in Grand Rapids, MI. Brian’s parents taught him at an early age that he was a sinner in need of a Savior, and he was redeemed through Christ. Brian did not remember a time when he did not love and follow the Lord. His parents taught him to read his Bible daily and put Christ first in all he did. Brian read and taught God’s word to his children and grandchildren at every meal together. He lived his life by the Great Commission. He never met a stranger and was a friend to all. Every conversation Brian would find a way to direct it back to Christ and His word. Brian loved serving and singing in his local church, Alaska Baptist. He loved giving a helping hand to his family and friends whenever needed. He loved camping with his family and served on the Board of Cranhill Ranch in Rodney, MI. Brian is preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Gladys Herweyer; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Boyd "Al" and Carolyn Tacoma; and his son, Robert Herweyer. He is survived by his loving wife and best friend, Betsy Herweyer (Tacoma) of 40 years; his children and grandchildren; Joshua and Jennifer (Boyd, Kinsley, Beckett, Kurt), Joel and Julie (Evangeline, Charles, Magnolia, Rosalie), Robert (deceased) and Joy (Robert Paul), Mitchell and Megan (Zion, Gerhard), Andrew and Elizabeth (Lincoln, Titus), Rachel and Thomas Westrate (Elliot). Also surviving are his siblings, Sally (Ray) Rodriguez, Marcia (Howard) Bultman, and Grace (Mike) Oudbier; his brothers-in-law, Andrew Tacoma, Daniel (Juli) Tacoma, and Timothy (Sue) Tacoma; and many nieces and nephews. The family will greet visitors on Friday, January 16, from 4 – 7 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th St. SE. The funeral service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, January 17, at Second Byron Center Christian Reformed Church, 7588 Byron Center Ave SW, with visitation prior to the service from 10 – 10:45 am. Rev. Michael L. Myers will officiate. Interment will be in Alaska Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Cranhill Ranch. Brian’s favorite verse was Psalm 118:14 “The Lord is my strength and my song; He has become my salvation.” We mourn and lean on the strength of the Lord at this time. |
