David Allen Van De Wege passed away at home embraced by his loved ones at the age of 73, on May 12, 2025, following a brief, brave and dignified battle with cancer. He was born in Wyoming, MI on June 17, 1951. He graduated from Godwin High School, where he excelled at tennis, and then from Western Michigan University. Dave worked at Kellogg’s in Grand Rapids for 36 years. He made many lifelong friends there who continued to see each other after retirement and into the final days of his life. David grew up in Home Acres Reformed Church and served on the consistory for several years. After being miniature bride and groom at the age of six in a wedding, Dave and Karen (Broekhuis) married 14 years later on May 5, 1972. They were happily married for over 53 years. Dave enjoyed traveling with his wife, golfing, pickleball, tennis and, above all, treasured spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Helena VanDeWege, and his siblings, James VanDeWege and Joyce DeBoer. David is lovingly remembered by his wife, Karen; children, Mark (Staci) Van De Wege, Tami (David) Rigterink; grandchildren, Drew, Jace, and Taylor Rigterink, Riannan, and Connor Van De Wege; sister and brothers, Beverly Hassevoort, Jerry (Donna) Van De Wege, Robert (Greta) Van De Wege; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Virgina Van De Wege, Judy (Al) Avink, Jerry (LuAnn) Broekhuis; many nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank Dr. Peter Van Veldhuizen, Susie Sebright PA-C, Megan and Gentiva Hospice for their tender care. The family will greet visitors on Friday, May 16, from 6 to 8 PM at Woodhaven Reformed Church. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 17, at 11 AM with a visitation prior from 10 – 10:45 AM at Woodhaven Reformed Church, 3959 68th St. SW, Byron Center, 49315. Pastor Jon Alexanian and Pastor Wayne Ondersma will officiate. Interment will be in Bentheim Cemetery. Memorial contributions in memory of David may be made to Calvin Christian School Association or Faith in Action, Inc. of Chelsea, MI.
