Bastian Van’t Voort, age 88, passed away peacefully to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on Sunday morning, February 9, 2025. Bas was a loving husband, father to five, grandfather to 11, and great grandfather to 15. Bas will be lovingly remembered and deeply missed by his faithful wife of 65 years, Janny, his children, Harry and Char and their family: Vince and Jessica, Lexi, James, Ava, Matt and Val, Anika, Elaina, Zeke, David Bastian and Kelsey, Lydia, Lena, Harrison Bastian; Al and Bonnie and their family: Tara, Emma, Grant, Mitch and Codi, Ali and Lia; Henry and his family: Rachel, Uriah and Avaiah; David and Lori and their family: Travis, Samantha and Austin; Jeanette and Jon Byker and their family: Jared and Bridgette, Jordyn, and Finn. Bas is survived by three sisters, Jenny, Elizabeth and Leni, two brothers, Everet and Herman, and a sister-in-law, Marianne, all who live in Canada. He has two brothers who have gone before him, Harry and Sam. Bas was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and loved his church, Free Reformed Church. He served there faithfully for many years and in many ways, including cleaning the church every Thursday (and taking a few coffee breaks) with his wife Janny, and their life-long friend, Liz Hubach. He especially loved traveling with the Word and Deed Mission team and did so ten times to Guatemala and one time to Colombia. Bas was a loyal employee of Duthler Ford Trucks for 40 years where he made life-long friendships. After he retired, Bas joined his boys at AAA Sling, working part time for another 10 years and enjoying every minute of it. A highlight of Bas and Janny’s year was their annual trip to Ripon, California to visit their oldest son, Harry, his wife, Char, and their three children and now nine grandchildren. Bas loved hopping into Harry’s 18-wheeler and hitting the road in beautiful California while Janny cooked and baked Dutch treats for their family. They both loved those trips very much. Bas loved to take walks with his daughter and grand dogs where they spent many beautiful moments talking about faith, and life, and whatever topics came to mind. Bas enjoyed being part of the Grand Rapids Harmonica Club, blessing many people with the joy of music. Bas also felt blessed to give of himself in the form of blood donations - being in the 10 gallon club, donating 57 times over 39 years. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Free Reformed Church, 950 Ball Ave. NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503, Rev. Jeff De Boer will officiate, special friend of the family, Julie LaRoque providing music. Relatives and friends may visit with the family on Friday, February 21 from 6:30 – 8:30 PM at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th St. SE, Grand Rapids, MI 49508, and on Saturday from 10 – 10:45 AM at Free Reformed Church prior to the service. A private burial will take place at Blain Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to Word and Deed. https://wordanddeed.org/donate/united-states/ |
