Gordon Levi Giar, age 89, of Caledonia, MI, passed away on Thursday, January 9, 2025. In recent years, you might catch brief snippets of Gordon sharing about his childhood. He was the 4th child of Clare and Tillie Giar (Curran, MI) who relocated the family to Charlevoix, MI, in his younger years. Sometime around nine years old, Gordon became custody of Jasper and Mary Warner (Charlevoix, MI) where he was raised until he wed. Little is known about this time in Gordon's life, other than these years were tough and he worked very hard, which engrained his work ethic and tenacity that many knew him for. Gordon met the love of his life, Nancy, daughter of Vercil and Maude Mason (Attwood, MI) through friends, at age 18. Soon after they married and moved to Grand Rapids, MI, due to Gordon's work with LW Edison. Experiences and mentors at LW Edison were often a fond recollection of Gordon's. It was hard work and long hours, but he was used to that. It also taught him valuable skills, which he really enjoyed. He became a talented and sought after Heavy Equipment Repair Mechanic by area Construction Companies and Heavy Equipment Dealers. In 1972 Gordon broke out on his own, turning his work ethic and skill into Giar and Sons Equipment, Inc. Aptly named Giar & Sons Equipment Inc., as Gordon and Nancy raised three sons, Keith Edward Giar of Freeport, MI, Kenneth Todd Giar (Lori) of Hastings, MI, and Kevin Lee Giar (Christine) of Bellaire, MI. Gordon and Nancy have seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. For a duration, each of the sons and their wives and some grandchildren gained work experience in the family business. As for hobbies and spare time, Gordon's love was work. But not just work for the sake of work. It was relationships. Forget today's technology, it was about pounding the pavement to meet new customers and shake their hand. He did this into his late 80's - always trying to match the right products to meet the customer's equipment needs and working tirelessly to "get them off dead center." At the time of his passing, Gordon was also a member of the Board at Leisure Creek Condos, attended Ada Bible Church and Caledonia United Methodist Church, including men's Bible studies and enjoyed many dinners and events with family and friends, particularly special friends, Jeff (Tori) Gillesse and Lynda Bohley. The family will greet visitors on Thursday, January 16, from 11 am - 1 pm at Ada Bible Church - Cascade, 8899 Cascade Rd. SE, Ada, where the funeral service will begin at 1 PM. Interment will be in Alaska Cemetery. Gordon was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy. In her memory, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Hill Road, S.W., Lilburn, GA 30047 |
