Mary Sue “Sue” VanAntwerp Spencer, 90, passed away on January 23, 2024 in Grand Rapids, MI. She was born on April 29,1933 in Franklin, IN, the cherished daughter of Dr. J.O. and Lillian VanAntwerp. Sue went to Franklin High School and was a proud graduate of Franklin College, earning her Bachelor’s in English education. She also served as president of her Tri-Delta sorority. While at Franklin College, Sue met the love of her life, Lloyd Spencer. They married in 1955 and enjoyed 64 years side by side. Lloyd’s career took them to 7 new cities in the Midwest, starting and ending in Columbus, IN. Sue found new teaching jobs with every move and also earned her Master’s in English at Oakland University. Together, Sue and Lloyd raised their two children and made many dear friends. In their later years, Lloyd and Sue retired to Columbus and were involved with the Unitarian Church and Franklin College Alumni. Sue enjoyed trips to Shakespeare theater, the Indianapolis Symphony, and abroad. Her other favorite activities included singing in choirs, costume parties, reading, knitting, and shopping. After Lloyd sustained a brain injury, Sue was the devoted, loving wife, always seen holding his hand. After his passing, she moved closer to her children in Michigan.

Sue was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, and her brother and sister-in-law, Bob (Jo) VanAntwerp. She is survived by her children Diane (Mark) Carlson and David (Linda) Spencer; five grandchildren: Karen (John) Dorcy, Mark Carlson II, Jenna Spencer, Luke (Cassie) Spencer, Jack Spencer; three adored great-granddaughters: Olive and Etta Carlson and Natalie Dorcy; and beloved extended family on both sides.

Sue will be remembered with a private family memorial. According to their wishes, Lloyd and Sue will have their ashes blended together forever.
