Memorials:  A local animal rescue of your choice

Patricia Ellen Vander Ploeg, age 67, of Kentwood, MI passed away on May 27, 2021, after a long battle with heart disease.  Patty, her nickname as the youngest of seven children, was a lifelong resident of the Grand Rapids area.  The devoted mom of three went back to school when her children were still young to eventually graduate with a Bachelors Degree in Computer Science at Grand Valley State University.  Shortly after graduation Pat was employed by Steelcase.  She loved her job and was incredibly proud of the life she had built for herself.  She eventually retired from Steelcase, due to complications from a heart valve replacement.  She spent retirement  singing in the Resurrection Life Choir, enjoying her pool,  spending time with her family and friends and becoming an advocate for rescue animals.  Mostly, though, she reveled in her new title Grandma Pat and spoiling her grandchildren.   Patty was preceded in death by her parents, Kathryn Jean (Prince) Melvig and Aris Kenneth Vander Ploeg; sisters, Karen Sue DeVerneay and Arlis Kay Powers;  brother, Daniel Lee VanderPloeg; and her personal rescues, Hope and Blondie.  She is survived by her sisters, Kathy Lipscomb and Janice Pearce; her brother, Donald Vander Ploeg;  her children, Troy (Jennifer) Bartz, Mark (Carrie) Bartz and Kathryn Bartz; her grandchildren, Sara (Jeremy) Merrill,  Bailey Elliott, Laura Bartz, Aydia Bartz; and current rescue, Katty Purry.  Her family is hosting a Celebration of Life ceremony at 4pm, with a casual reception to follow on Friday, June 18th at  Douglas Walker Park, 1195 84th St, Byron Center, MI, 49315.  The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to your local animal rescue.  Condolences and personal remembrances may be sent online to Stroo Funeral Home.
