James Carl Grit, follower of Jesus Christ and committed educator, breathed his last
breath on earth July 9, 2023 at 4.30 am. Concluding a journey that began in
Jamestown, Michigan on September 8, 1935, he fought the good fight, finished the
race, and kept the faith while teaching and administrating 42 years at Celeryville
Christian School in Celeryville, Ohio.
Jim was preceded in death by his faithful teaching partner and wife of 62 years,
Barbara Jane in February 2018, and his parents Cornelius and Frances Grit.
Continuing the race are children Michelle Jane, Jonathan Scott (Renae), and Jamie
Kay (Rod) Alderink; grandchildren Rachel Renae Grit, Julia Jenae Grit, Elijah True
Grit, Allison Jamie (Tyler) Kruis, Mattie Leigh Alderink; great-grandchildren Colson
Stephen Lowisz and Lucy Jane Kruis; and brothers Bill (Joan) Grit, Nelson (Betty)
Grit, and sister Carlene (Gary) Hoeksema.
A visitation and Celebration of life service are planned July 21 (1-2 pm visitation, 2-3
pm Celebration of life service) at Stroo Funeral Home 1095 68 th Street SE, Grand
Rapids, MI 49508. As CS Lewis notes “now at last they were beginning Chapter One
of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which
every chapter is better than the one before.” To God Be The Glory!
Memorial contribution options to consider include Celeryville Christian School,
Spectrum Health Hospice, and Covenant Christian Reformed Church. One other
option, in place of memorial contributions, is to commit to taking a younger person
to lunch and teach them something valuable, and tell them Jim Grit sent you.
