On Sunday, February 26, 2023, Roger Heyer finally got to walk and talk with his Lord Jesus in heaven.  Roger grew up on Howard and Dolby streets in southeast Grand Rapids with his parents, Leon and Eva; his brother, Don; sister, Norma; and twin brother, Robert. Roger met his sweetheart, Joyce Koning in 1948, on a blind date just before going into the Navy. Despite keeping her out well past curfew, teenaged, penniless Roger, won Joyce (and her family) over, and they were married from 1951, until her death in 2019. Roger worked hard to support his family as a tool and die maker, and he was a strong spiritual leader. He loved Mustang cars, barbershop music, golf, wholesome old comedies, babies, his grand dogs and naps. Roger shared his gift of contentment with his four children and their spouses, Dan and Linda Heyer, Carol and Bob Bolt, Karen and Bob DeVries, and Gayle and Mike VanGessel; his 14 grandkids; 7 (+1 on the way) great grands. He also loved sharing his homemade popcorn at every opportunity.  Although rarely at a loss for words or a wise crack, Roger led mostly by his faithful example that pointed to his heavenly Father. Roger excelled at being a dad and a grandpa. Everything that made Roger a strong father made him an even better grandfather. He gave time, listened, imparted true wisdom and modeled an ‘attitude of gratitude’.  At times an agreeable contrarian, it was an honor to philosophize with Roger; it was possibly his favorite pastime.  Roger’s family, old friends, and the new friends that he made toward the end of his life, will miss the trademark twinkle of his blue eyes and the break in his voice when asked to talk with God before a meal. Please celebrate Roger’s 93 years on earth with us on Monday, March 13, at LaGrave Avenue Christian Reformed Church, 107 LaGrave Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, 49503.  Visitation will start at 10:00 a.m. followed by the memorial service at 11:00 a.m. Guests are invited to attend a luncheon immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Roger’s name to Mel Trotter Ministries, 225 Commerce Ave. SW, Grand Rapids, MI. 49503.  https://www.meltrotter.org/
