Herb and Shirley were my favorite uncles and aunt growing up in Holland. Herb and my father were the family engineers and could build the most amazing stuff out of a box of spare parts. Our extended family Christmas parties on Jerome Street was the best day of the year. Once I moved to Grand Rapids for college I was at the Blaine Street house more than my own. The dinner conversation was always fascinating. No topic was off limits, and looking back I think Herb was probably the first liberal I knew, outside of college of course. I hope he was aware that I am ending my career in the Astronomy department at Harvard. He would have liked that. Ironically, one of my students just took a position in Physics at GRJC, it might have been his. As good Calvinists all, Herb and Shirley were models of transforming culture in the name of Jesus. We were fortunate to have grown up under their watchful eyes. Herb would have loved my church in Boston. May they rest in peace.

Condolences to your family. You father, grandfather was my Professor at GRJC in the 1980's. He was very tough but very caring and helpful which assisted me in going further to receiving my engineering degree. I have a lot of fond memories of his lectures and labs. What a great man!
