Cemetery:  Resurrection
Memorials: Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary at mackenzies.info or 8935 Thompson Rd., Lake Odessa, MI 48849.

Karen Ann Urbanowski, age 72, passed away peacefully at her home in Kentwood, Michigan, on Monday, September 28.

Karen Ann was born January 2, 1948, in Detroit. She met Daniel Urbanowski when they attended the University of Michigan, and they married on April 26, 1974 at St. Francis of Assisi Church in Ann Arbor. She gave birth to Dereck in 1980. They spent a few years in North Carolina, where Scott was born in 1987, before moving to Kentwood in 1988.

Wherever Dan, Dereck, or Scott were, there was Karen Ann - and not just in a supporting role. She took an active role in her sons' education, she got to know their teachers well, and she regularly attended their band concerts; Dereck's track and field and cross country meets; and Scott's quiz bowl tournaments. When Dan joined Knights of Columbus Council 4362, she quickly got involved in the Council's Women's Guild. For several years she chaired the Council's annual "Tootsie Roll Drive", which raised more than $10,000 per year for programs for mentally impaired individuals in the Wyoming and Kentwood areas. She also organized activities for clergy, veterans, and family members of troops serving overseas.

When she wasn't making her mark on the community or supporting her family, you could probably find her in a garden. In 2004, she earned Advanced Master Gardener certification through Kent/MSU Extension. She also loved animals, including the many birds, fish, and dogs who have called the Urbanowski house home over the years. She enjoyed reading mystery novels, making people laugh, and long conversations with family and friends. (Let's just say she may or may not have invented the "Midwestern goodbye".) But most of all, she loved her Lord Jesus Christ as well as her family. She always desired to do what was right, and she inspired all who knew her to do the same. (She could very well be correcting the grammar of this obituary from Heaven!)

Karen Ann was preceded in death by her parents, Julius and Bernice Young; parents-in-law, Edward and Christine (Lange) Urbanowski; and many aunts, uncles, and pets. She is survived by her husband, Daniel Urbanowski of Kentwood; sons, Dereck Urbanowski (Erin McDade) of Bellingham, WA, and Scott Urbanowski of Kentwood; sister, Nancy Young of Littleton, CO; brother-in-law, Thomas Urbanowski (Denise) of Brownstown Township; sister-in-law, Suzanne Statetzny (Todd) of Novi; nieces, Monica Urbanowski (James Miller), April Urbanowski, and Morgan Statetzny; nephew, Benjamin Urbanowski; and dog, Phoebe of Kentwood. Per her wishes, no public services are planned. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Mackenzie's Animal Sanctuary at mackenzies.info or 8935 Thompson Rd., Lake Odessa, MI 48849. You may also honor her memory by planting flowers in your garden. (She would remind you that this is a good time of year to plant bulbs.)
