David G. Tubergen, M.D., age 83, passed away Friday, August 28, 2020, in Grand Rapids, MI. David was born March 9, 1937 to Renard and Annette (Hertel) Tubergen in Grand Rapids, MI.  On June 13, 1958, he married Marianne Peuler in Grand Rapids, MI.

David graduated from Calvin College and University of Michigan Medical School.  After completing a fellowship in pediatric oncology at University Hospital, Ann Arbor, he did a research fellowship at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation in La Jolla, CA.  Among his various appointments, he was Senior Vice President and Medical Director at Children’s Hospital Denver, Professor at the University of Tennessee School of Medicine, vice chairman of the Department of Hematology at St Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Director of the Pediatric Clinic at MD Anderson, and Medical Director MD Anderson Physicians Network.  David was most proud of his work as Principal Investigator on the historic clinical trials that dramatically improved therapy for acute lymphoblastic leukemia.  The trials conducted by the national Children’s Cancer Group demonstrated the optimal pace and schedule of chemotherapy and led to a better understanding of how to manage many forms of cancer in addition to childhood leukemia.  David’s bibliography includes 72 scientific papers and book chapters.

He was a member of Caledonia Christian Reformed Church. David was an avid fisherman and golfer. He was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Marianne.  He will be missed by his children, Joyce (Jim) Desmond of Tampa, FL, Renard (Cheri) Tubergen of Caledonia, MI and Jennifer (Larry) Warden of Boise, ID; grandchildren, Sean Desmond, Lauren (Ian) Lynch, Berend Tubergen, Boyd Tubergen, Brice Warden and Brock Warden; and his loving sister, Jan Tubergen. David was preceded in death by his sister, Renee Tubergen.

Family Visitation will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 12, with a Memorial Service taking place at 11:30 am at Caledonia Community Green Pavilion located in front of the Caledonia Library (6260 92nd St. SE). Reverend Scott Greenway will be officiating.

Dear Tubergen Children, I just found your dad's name in the November Banner, and it rang a bell. Sure enough, your parents visited our family while my parents were missionaries in Japan, Ed and Fran VanBaak. Though we had many visitors from overseas, David and Marianne were particularly memorable. Grateful for all the good work done in this world in His Name.

I remember Dave with admiration, affection, and respect as the Medical Director at Children's Hospital, Colorado when I was a pediatric resident and later when I was a junior faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics. He was a strong leader, a patient teacher, and a distinguished role model.

I am in his debt, also, for the work he did on the clinical trials that advanced the care of children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). My daughter developed ALL when she was 8 years-old. ALL was a death sentence 25 years earlier, but my daughter was cured with 2 years of chemotherapy at Children's. She is now 36 years-old and the mother of 5 year-old twins.

In Paradisum deducant te angeli ...

To Joyce & Jim, Ren & Cheri, Jennifer & Larry:
Barbara and I extend our sincere sympathy to you in the loss of your dad. Your parents were our good friends many years ago in Ann Arbor and in Japan, and we always enjoyed their company. And in more recent years we had good visits in Colorado and Texas and here in Michigan. Your mom and dad were always cheerful and helpful.

We regret that we are unable to join you today, but you are in our thoughts and prayers. May God bless you and your families as you journey on, and may you experience His comfort and peace all the days of your lives.

With our love,
Mart & Barbara

Dr. T,

At age 7, I had my whole life ahead of me when childhood cancer struck. My family brought me to the number 1 cancer institute and God brought us to you! When the odds were against me, you never gave up! Twenty two years ago, you saved my life!

Now, I am a Pediatric Oncology Nurse Practitioner at the same hospital where you saved my life! I have never forgotten the exceptional care you and the entire team provided to me!

So, THANK YOU DR T for saving my life and thousands of others! I know you were welcomed into the gates of Heaven by thousands of angels whom you helped! I look forward to seeing you again some day!
