Service Information

Nancy L. Penning
Service:  None

Nancy L Penning, 69, was called to be with her Lord and Savior on July 27, 2020. She was born March 20, 1951, in Fairbanks, Alaska, to John and Betty Penning. She enjoyed an abundant Christian life and traveled the world through her father’s career with Pan American World Airways. As a teenager, Nancy witnessed to children using a flannel board depicting Bible stories and songs. She was a courageous girl riding her Honda motor scooter around Harbel, Liberia, with her pet chimpanzee dressed in infant clothes perched in front of her. Nancy continued caring for teenagers through her career at Wedgwood Christian Services. Nancy loved family gatherings, singing in the church choir, and camping with friends. She loved to laugh until the tears rolled. Her generous spirit touched the lives of many people—family, friends, and strangers. She leaves behind her sister and best friend Sharon Penning, brother Robert Penning, sister Susan (Penning) Alexander, sister and caregiver Dawn (Phil) Anderson, plus nieces and nephews: Dia (Jess) Tschirki-Penning and Gus, Rose (David) Weaver and Justin, Christina Alexander and Shane and Grace, Tori (Kyle) Kisling, Kitty (Josh) Elliott and Peggy, Annie Anderson, and Henry Anderson. Due to current health concerns, no services are being held. The family asks that you sign the online guestbook and include a fond memory of our sister and aunt at

I worked with Nancy at Wedgwood. She had such a big heart and worked hard to serve the kids and the agency. Her leadership and witness taught me much as a young staff.

My life is adorned with wonderful memories with my Aunt Nancy. Being one of my mother's great friends we were often making trips to Grand Rapids to visit, watch football games from her backyard, and explore all the treasures to be found in her home. She was always ready to laugh, smile, and be merry. I am so grateful for having her in my life.

Nancy was always a listening ear when I needed one, and I'm glad that I got to return the favor by caring for her when she needed it. Some of my best childhood memories include camping with her and her friends--Sue, Ellie, Sandy. She successfully taught me how to pitch a tent and paddle a canoe and paint a fence and unsuccessfully tried to teach me to drive a stick. She also taught me all the silly songs I know, and that I passed down to my kids. Even when she was sometimes gruff or blunt, I never doubted that she loved me and wanted the best for me. I'm going to miss her tons. And Sue Hoekwater: Your name was also supposed to be in the obituary as her dear lifelong friend. I'm sorry I forgot to retype it in. Thanks for all who have expressed their sympathies already. We're confident that Nancy is fully healed in heaven with Jesus. Her ashes will be buried with Mom and Dad, as she would have wanted.
