As well as her parents and her husband, Esther was preceded in death by her brothers, Anthony and Gene Ver Hoeven; son-in-law, Laurel Farwell; and granddaughter, Danielle Farwell. In addition to her children, Esther is survived by 10 grandchildren and their spouses, as well as 33 great grandchildren; her brother, Maurice; sisters-in-law; several nieces and nephews; countless dear friends and fellow church members. After farming in North Dakota for almost 20 years, Esther and Gerrit served as missionaries in Nigeria, Africa for seven years. They later settled in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Esther worked at Pine Rest Hospital for 23 years. For several years, they opened their home to families who brought loved ones to stay at Pine Rest. She will be lovingly remembered as a woman who loved her Savior and her family, one who lived and shared her faith. "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours: and their works do follow them." (Rev. 4:13). Due to current health restrictions, private family services will be held. Interment in Blain Cemetery.

I was so pleased to visit with Esther at the Nieuwsma family reunion in 2013. She shared many stories. It was so nice that she and Irene Westra were both reunited at that reunion as they are now in heaven.
My sympathy to the family.

I can still remember the day Gerrit came to our door, checking out the neighborhood before buying their house. It was such a joy to have your family next door for so many years, and after Gerrit died to enjoy more fellowship with Esther- going out to eat together or just visit. They were very special people. You have my sympathy in the death of Esther now. She will be missed. Whenever I visited her she would show me a picture of each member of your family. She loved you all so very much!!
