William Docter, age 85, of Byron Center, heard the words "Well done, good and faithful servant", as he passed into his  eternal home on March 29, 2020. He was born in Elburg, the Netherlands, on September 18, 1934, the third of four sons to Arend and Jacoba Docter. He emigrated when he was 15 years old, with his family, to the United States and lived the remainder of his life in West Michigan, where he met and married the love of his life, Tena (Teuntje), and raised their four children. Bill served for several years in the U.S. National Guards. He worked as a "DJ" in a Fremont radio station, sold Fuller-Brush products door-to-door, worked at Shaw-Walker in Muskegon for many years upholstering office furniture and moonlighted doing upholstery in his home, then struck out on his own with a carpet-cleaning franchise. He loved working outdoors in his garden and communicating with ham radio contacts around the world, as well as participating in Ottawa County's Amateur Radio Civil Emergency Services. He made many happy memories camping with his wife, Tena (Teuntje) and his family. Bill was always active in his church, volunteering wherever he was needed. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Tena; children, Nella (Tom) Scholten, Jackie (Ken) Hiskes, Carol (Randy) VanderMate, and Bill (Denise) Docter; 21 grandchildren and spouses/significant others, seven great grandchildren; one brother, and several sisters- and brothers-in-law. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arend and Jacoba; two brothers and their spouses; and one great-grandson. Due to recent health concerns, a private family committal service has taken place at Winchester Cemetery. A public memorial service at Covenant Christian Reformed Church will be held at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to South Christian High School.
