On Friday, March 20, 2020, Jerome H. Smith, age 93, went peacefully to be with his Lord. Surrounded by his loving family and with his dear wife Jan at his side, he faithfully concluded his earthly walk. Jerome was blessed with a beautifully blended family to carry on his memory and legacy. He and his dear Jan were parents to Sue (Dave) Axel, Patricia (Larry) Geelhoed, Arlene (Lyle) Walseth, Sharon (Reed) Baker, Dan (Kim) VanEngen, John (Chris) VanEngen, and JoAnn (Kurt) VerBeek. They were blessed with 22 grandchildren and 33 great grandchildren. Jerome lived a thoughtful and contented life that blessed so many people in so many ways. He was born to Harry and Tena (Wieringa) Smith on November 28, 1926, and grew up on the Cutlerville family farm. He learned to respect hard work and frugality from growing up through the Great Depression and he was never one to waste anything. He grew up quickly after losing his father at the age of 12 and worked hard beside his brother John on the farm, and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Army. Being intelligent and curious, he looked beyond the farm for work opportunities and settled into a career of professional truck driving. He proudly drove for the Behler-Young Company for many years. Jerome had interests outside of work and family. He was an avid golfer and loved to spend Saturdays with his many friends being both competitive and jolly on the courses. He vacationed with his family on trips in a caravan with other lifelong friends and their families. They visited multiple locations throughout the country and forged both friendships and memories. Singing in the church choir at his beloved Cutlerville East Christian Reformed Church was a long-standing tradition that Jerome cherished. He helped instill a love of music and singing that his family continues to this day. And his family returned that gift of song to him surrounding him with hymns as he went to glory to meet his "Heavenly Friend". He loved the Lord with all his heart and prayed everyday that his family and friends would know the love of God. He was never short on topics of conversation with all he met. He would love to share his fascination with other languages and technology advances. He shared his many secret handshakes, nicknames, funny stories, and jokes with all in his realm. He was always charming and warm to everyone he met. His family will forever cherish the love, leadership, compassion, and faith he displayed throughout his life. We will strive to follow in the direction he guided us and to keep our eyes and hearts focused on Christ the way he did. A private family committal service will be held at Blain Cemetery. A memorial service celebrating Jerome's life and faith will be held at Cutlerville East CRC at a later date. Memorial contributions may be made to AJS (Association for a More Just Society) or to the tuition assistance fund at Legacy Christian School.

What a beautiful obituary for a beautiful man. He WAS the kindest and funniest man I ever knew. I wish I had been able to golf with him; what a pleasure that would have been. All my sympathy, Jan and family.
