Hallelujah! Donna L. Sytsma, age 91, of Grand Rapids, is in heaven with her Lord and Savior! She passed away Sunday, February 23, 2020 and was born on November 7, 1928. The eighth child of Cornelius and Alice VanderWeide of Grand Rapids, Donna was the last of her generation to pass into heaven and was looking forward to uniting with everyone there. Donna married her Ottawa Hills High School sweetheart, Donald Gentz in 1949 and gave birth to Sherrilyn. Sadly, Don died in 1953. As a single mother, Donna studied nursing at Butterworth Hospital School of Nursing and worked as a nurse until she married and started her new family with Robert Sytsma, her cherished husband of 60 years. Bob passed away in 2016. He built their dream home where they raised their four daughters; Sherrilyn Sytsma, Mary (Rick) Shanoski, Cynthia (Ron, deceased) Brumley, and Ruth (Rob Lycett) Sytsma. Donna was always busy with her hands; sewing, knitting and crocheting. She had an unmatched sense of humor, appreciated by others. She brought this happiness to others while working as a Resident Nurse at The Holland Home. A true Michigander, she enjoyed everything the Water, Winter Wonderland offered. Bob and Donna also camped extensively in the US and Canada. Besides her daughters, Donna was blessed with 5 Grandchildren and 6 Great Grandchildren. She had a multitude of Nieces and Nephews and 2 surviving sisters-in-law, Mary VanderWeide and Kathy Sytsma. Visitation will take place at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th Street, SE on Tuesday, Feb. 25, from 5 to 7 pm and on Wednesday, Feb. 26, from 10 to 11 am at Raybrook Manor. Funeral services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, February 26, 2020 at the Holland Home Raybrook Manor Chapel, 2121 Raybrook St, SE; with a reception to follow.  Reverend Kirk VanderMolen, her Grand Nephew will officiate. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.

Aunt Donna and I had a wonderful relationship I was her favorite nephew and of course she was my very favorite aunt. Donna and my mother Harriett were the best of friends, what one didn’t think of the other did.
Pat and I are sorry we will not be with you this week but I remember our last visit when she said her last goodbye.
