Thurber Stanley

Service Information

Stanley Roy Thurber

Memorial Service: Held at a later date at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Wyoming, MI

Cemetery:  Eagar, AZ cemetery

Stanley Roy Thurber, age 91, of Byron Center, MI, was at home when he passed away peacefully on January 13, 2020. He was born to Joseph Shelton Thurber and Phebe Cox on August 8, 1928 in Fairfield, ID, the sixth of seven children.

He served in the US Army, then served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. After returning from his mission he enrolled at Brigham Young University where he met and fell in love with Bobbie June Ball. They were married in the Mesa, Arizona temple on February 22, 1954.

Stan and Bobbie are the parents of eleven children: Mark (Marleen), Karen Whiting (Jack), Stephen (Karen), Michael (Carolyn), David (deceased August 15, 1962), Elaine (Dan Foster), Daryl, Kerry (Lisa), Sam (Ned), Cheryl, and Nathan. There are 44 grandchildren and 51 great-grandchildren.

In the early years of their marriage, Stan supported his family and funded his education by working in sandstone masonry. He  quarried and cut the rock himself, with the help of Bobbie June and even some of the children. He soon began teaching High School music as well, in Montpelier ID, Hurricane UT, Chinle AZ and Eagar AZ.

Bobbie June passed away in April of 2012. Later, Stan met Judy Morse and married her on January 10, 2014. They made their home in Byron Center, MI.

Stanley will be missed for many reasons, but mostly for his gift of love and kindness to everyone he ever met.

He was a man of very simple faith, unusually humble, yet also a sophisticated thinker and an artist of the highest order.

Funeral services and interment will take place in Eagar, AZ. A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Wyoming, MI.
