Steven Mitchell Schreur died at Metro Hospital in Grand Rapids on Tuesday, December 17, 2019. He was 57 years old. He died peacefully of pneumonia under the care of Faith Hospice. He is the beloved son of David and Sally Schreur, and the brother of Sara Geisler and her family. Shortly after birth he aspirated amniotic fluid which caused anoxia resulting in brain injury. It was a challenge for him which he took on and lived a full and productive life. He was loved by all who knew him. He loved to joke and to interact with people. He understood what people were saying but it was difficult for him to express himself. He was known as "Smiley Steve" at Camp Sunshine which he loved every summer. He was actively involved with Special Olympics each year, loved church and his Jesus Class. When he was 26 years old he left his parents' home and began a wonderful life at a Pine Rest Group Home. His parents continued to bring him home on weekends and loved being with his sister, Sara and her husband, Tom, and their two daughters, Anna and Elle. He had a full life, lots of friends and they all loved him. God blessed us for 57 years with Steve. He will be missed by all who knew him. The family will greet visitors on Saturday, December 21, from 2 - 4 pm at Stroo Funeral Home. Private burial will take place in Saugatuck this summer. Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Sunshine, MI or the Pine Rest Group Homes.
