                                                                                                Grand Rapids, MI

Mary Boonstra, age 96, passed away peacefully with family present on Friday, November 15, 2019. Mary was born in Grand Rapids, the daughter of the late Henry and Ann (Schellenberg) Rison. Mary’s parents were immigrants from the Netherlands who traveled to the United States to make a better life for their family with more opportunities. Mary’s childhood began on Leonard Street where her father owned a Singer Sewing Machine store and going to the cinema with her older brother for 5 cents a show. She was a graduate of Union High School, traveled to California with her close friend Rosemary after high school, and later met and married the love of her life, Jack Boonstra, at the Silver Cloud. Mary worked hard to raise their three children while Jack was a successful residential/commercial builder for 37 years. After the death of her mother, her father moved in with the family for ten years, which added to the great family dynamics they fostered. Mary was a talented seamstress and developed into a very good golfer in later years. She loved to play bridge and many other card games with family and friends. Jack and Mary’s close friends were an important part of their lives; traveling, golfing, playing cards and enjoying each other’s company. They were lucky enough to spend their last years together in the loving environment at Heather Hills Retirement Community. Mary had the unique talent to light up any room with her presence. Her witty sense of humor, ability to find the positive in any situation and loving ways made her a favorite wherever she went. She was such a positive ambassador for how to live life! Mary was preceded in death by her husband Jack of 70 years and her son Jason, of Paso Robles, CA. She will be lovingly remembered by her children; Rick (Elizabeth) of Sparta, Jan (Robert) DeShazo of Kalamazoo; grandchildren Fawn, Loren, Amelia, Ross, Trevor and Jesse; great grandchild, Andrew; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.
