When Mary Jane walked into a room light and loveliness accompanied her.  Her eye for color and texture cast beauty wherever she went, and her deep love of life brought infectious joy to everyone present. She relished travel and play and poolsides, and welcomed soccer and golf games even into her fifties.  Her embrace of family and friends was unrelenting, as was her love for "her guys." Mary Jane taught us how to live and how to die, gifting all who journeyed with her. The course she set for the past several years was the same she set all her days: live joyfully whatever life puts forth. She did all she could to overcome the cancer, and then decided last spring that treatments would stop. She decided how and when she would leave this life and embraced her last months as she had all the years she was with us. She brought as much wonder and joy to all who visited her in hospice as they brought to her. Her spirit for life never faded, ever. She first saw life in a Mississippi River town in southern Illinois, and after various family job moves arrived in Houghton Lake, Michigan where she graduated high school. Being an artist-designer was her soul and passion.  It took her to Kendall College in Grand Rapids and onto ROI Design where she worked 25 years as an Interior Designer bringing abundant, striking beauty to settings far and wide. In 1988, shipboard at a dock in Douglas, she married her lifelong love, Dick Caster.  For thirty-one years they lived in Kentwood, raised Ryan and Austin, attended most every high school sports event ever scheduled, and saw their beloved sons into the fullness of life and vocations and their own partners. As a family they built successful careers and businesses, shared generously with their community, relished travel and sports, adopted Florida as a favorite getaway, and always kept close to large and extended families encompassing ten siblings between them, and their spouses, nieces and nephews scattered across the country and globe. Mary Jane's passing leaves an emptiness in a lot of lives.  But know with certainty that it is an emptiness that will be filled with memories of the wondrous love and joy she brought to all those she touched over fifty-five years.  From the time she was a little one to the time of her journey's end she was, indeed, light and life and love and laughter.  May it also be so for us and for all peoples.
On Sunday, October 13, 2019, Mary Jane Caster, age 55, of Kentwood, left this life and entered her heavenly home. Mary Jane will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 31 years, Dick; her sons, Ryan Caster, Austin (Melissa) Caster; her mother, Betty Schichtel; brothers and sisters, Rosamond (Dave) Ostendorf, Dona (Paul) Jester, Howard (Sally) Meeker, Elizabeth (Gary) Clous, Doree (Joseph) Grabowski, Steven (Lori) Meeker; many nieces and nephews; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, David (Vicki) Caster, Sue (Dave) Davis, Cindy (Ron) Babcock. The family will greet visitors  at Stroo Funeral Home (), where the funeral service will begin . Rev. David Ostendorf will officiate. Interment will be in Blain Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Faith Hospice.
