Hiroko (Betty) Geelhoed, age 88, with her usual grace and dignity, has completed her time on earth and has gone to join her husband, Don. Hiroko passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Faith Hospice Trillium Woods in the care of her family and professionals. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 60 years, Donald J. Geelhoed. Hiroko was born to Shigeru and Akiko Ito in Tokyo, Japan on January 17, 1931. She was a strong and brave World War II survivor of bombings, a decimated city of Tokyo, a destroyed home, near starvation, and a scattered family. It was during the Korean Conflict that she met her husband, Don, and they were married September 26, 1952 in Tokyo, Japan. Hiroko navigated all the challenges of a move across the world, leaving her family behind, and raising five children in a strange and moving culture. She leaves her love and legacy to her five children and their spouses, David (Pat Fisher) Geelhoed, Andy (Helen) Geelhoed, Tom (Nancy) Geelhoed, Larry (Pat) Geelhoed, Ellen (Bill) Fagan, and Mary Ellen Geelhoed. Hiroko was also very blessed with eleven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Hiroko always had an eye for beautiful things and saw the positive around her. She was very gifted and creative in floral design. She had an outstanding career at multiple businesses as a Master Floral Designer, friend and mentor to her co-workers. She was creatively employed at J.C. Bigelow, Sunnyslope Floral, Eastern Floral, and Fruitbasket Flowerland. She participated for many years in Ikebana which is a style of traditional artistic Oriental floral design. She reached a level of certification as a Master Third Term Course in Ikebana from the Ohara School of Ikebana and she was certified as an Assistant Teacher for the same. She was a long-time member of Ikebana International. In her retirement she enjoyed volunteering her talents at New2You resale store doing floral arrangements to benefit Grand Rapids Christian Schools. She was a longtime, faithful member of Princeton Christian Reformed Church, (5330 Kalamazoo Ave. SE) where the funeral service will be held at 11:30 am on Saturday, October 12, with Rev. Jerry DeVries officiating. Interment will be in Kent Memorial Gardens. The family will greet relatives and friends on Friday, October 11, from 2 - 4 and 6 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home and on Saturday prior to the service from 10:30 - 11:15 am at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Legacy Christian School Foundation.

So sad that you had to say 'Goodbye" but not really "Goodbye" but "See you in heaven". She was a wonderful Christian woman and now is in heaven with her Savior. Special lady!
