Don Van Der Weele, age 87, was called home to be with his Lord and Savior on August 31, 2019, after six years of suffering from pulmonary fibrosis. Don was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to Danker and Cora (Gabrielse) Van Der Weele. He graduated from Sheboygan Christian School and North High School. Don married Joan Edith Van Haveren on May 10, 1958 at First Christian Reformed Church in Sheboygan. Don was a loving husband, dad, and grandpa, who cherished his children, grandchildren, family and friends. He had a great sense of humor and always put others before himself. Don worked for the Kohler Company for a total of 40 years, 20 years as a foreman, and retired in February, 1995. Don and Joan moved to Grand Rapids (Cutlerville), Michigan to be by their children and grandchildren. They were his pride and joy, and he loved to attend their sports events and other activities. In addition to the joy of raising a family, Don and Joan would take trips to Florida for three weeks at a time in early spring, and he enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles. Don distributed church tracts on Friday nights throughout Sheboygan, and then after joining Covenant CRC, he and Joan continued to distribute tracts to about seven places a month for ten years. Don and Joan delivered meals to homes two times a month in the Caledonia area. Don played golf and was on the church league for many years. He served in the Army for two years and was stationed in Germany from 1953 -1955, after the Korean War ended. In addition to Joan, his dear wife of 61 years, Don is survived by their three children and grandchildren, Brian and Lois Vander Weele (Karisa, Kayla), Keith and Lori Vander Weele (Elise and fiance Nick, Elena, Eden), Cheryl and Dave Spoelma (Kyle and Leanne, Tyler); his brother, Ray and Phyllis (Palazzolo) Vander Weele, and Harriet (Elmer) Vander Weele; and numerous nieces and nephews. Don was preceded in death by his parents as well as his many siblings, Jeanette (Rich) Sittema, Steve (Viola) Vander Weele, Gertie (Henry) Krygsheld, Harold (Betty) Vander Weele, Clarence (Harriet) Vander Weele, Herbert (Emma) Vander Weele, Elmer Vander Weele, Phyllis Ten Pas Vander Weele. Don's family would like to thank Dr. Hoekwater and staff for their six years of care, along with the staff of Samaritas Terraces, Samaritas Lodge, and Hospice of Michigan (a special thanks to Cindy and Kim), who enabled Don to live life fully right up to the end. Visitation will be held Friday, September 6, from 5 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held 11 am Saturday, September 7, with visitation from 10 - 10:45 am, at Covenant Christian Reformed Church, 7171 Willard Ave. SE, with his son-in-law, Rev. David Spoelma, and his pastors, Rev. Curt Walters and Rev. Evan Heerema, officiating. Interment will be in Blain Cemetery. Those who wish to make a memorial contribution can do so to South Christian High School or Hospice of Michigan. My only comfort in life and death is that I am not my own, but belong body and soul, in life and in death, to my faithful Savior, Jesus Christ.
