                                              Donald Richard Jarka

                                                Byron Center, MI

                                  June 16, 1938 – February 27, 2019

Don Jarka, age 80, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 27, 2019, after his courageous struggle with pancreatic cancer. Don exhibited a lifelong dedication to his Lord by witnessing to anyone he would meet. His belt buckle “Perhaps Today” would start many opportunities in sharing the gospel of Christ. He said, “Souls are the only things I can take to Heaven.” To be a part of the Great Commission is a great honor and he wanted to be faithful to his Lord. Don was preceded in death by his father, Ernest Jarka, and mother, Hilda Jarka. Surviving are his wife, Donna, of 26 years; and his two children, Matthew (Jodi) Jarka and Dawnae (John-Thomas) Richards; two step-children, Sheri (John) Benedict and Robert Tell; 10 grandchildren: Ethan Jarka, Emma Jarka, Aiden Jarka, Andie Jarka, Trey Richards, Alysabeth Richards, Grayce Richards, Brittany Lake, Josie Lake and Jessie Lake; three great-grandchildren, Aidan Lake, Christopher Lake and Miles Cole, Jr.; his brothers, Fred (Diane) Jarka, Roland (Carol) Jarka; sister, Carol (Bill) Kitchell, and several nieces and nephews. Don accepted Christ at Moody Church in Chicago at the age of 16 at a Youth for Christ meeting. The Lord directed him to study and pursue the printing trade at 16, and for the next 46 years. Don worked at Moody Bible Institute for five years, printing God’s word. At age 20, he was the leader of a Christian Boys Brigade Club. He served in the United States Army for three years as a helicopter mechanic. While serving 18 months in Korea, he spent his free time with World Vision orphanages finding a love for the children. After Korea, he married and adopted a 10-month-old little girl, Dawnae. Don and Donna served in the S.O.W.E.R. (Servants on Wheels Ever Ready) ministry for over 14 years, working with youth camps. For eight years he sold handmade creative wares at West Michigan craft shows as a means of sharing the gospel of Christ. Visitation will take place on Saturday, March 9, at 10 am, followed by a memorial service at 11 am, at Woodward Baptist Church, 2160 76th Street, SW, Byron Center, MI. In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Don may be made to Grace Adventures, 2100 N. Ridge Rd., Mears, MI 49436.
