Matthew Andrew Koning

February 25, 1939 – February 17, 2019

Matt Koning, age 79, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Sunday, February 17, 2019. after enduring a long struggle with kidney cancer. He exhibited a life long dedication to his Lord by being an example of Christ’s love through prayer for his family and friends, ministering to those who had few friends and studying God’s word with CBMC businessmen for over 35 years. Matt was born to Jack and Harriet Koning in Grand Rapids. He graduated from GRCHS and attended college at Western and Calvin College.  He met Rose Ann Besselsen and they married on August 9, 1961. Matt’s interest in “making things go” led to a 55-year career in the diesel engine industry. His life-long partner, Rose, became his business partner when they purchased Peninsular Diesel. Matt pioneered milestones in the diesel engine industry by applying his expertise to the marine industry. Surviving Matt are his wife of 57 years, Rose Ann; and children, Amy (Rick) Stygstra, Jocelyn (Phil) VerLee, Tricia (John) Llewellyn, and Chip (Jodi) Koning; his brother, Charles (Diane) Koning; and sisters-in-law, Glenda Koning and Hermina Besselsen. He cherished his nine grandchildren, Ethan, Kyle, Emily and Jeremy Stygstra, Cash, Opal and Viola Koning, Maya and Stuart Llewellyn. Preceding him in death are his father and mother, and brother, Fred Koning. Memorial gifts may be sent to Faith Hospice or Grace Adventures in Mears, MI, 2100 North Ridge Road, Mears, MI 49436. The memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 23, at 11am at LaGrave CRC, 107 LaGrave Ave. SE. Visitation will begin at 9:30-10:30am and will continue during a lunch reception following the service.
