Herman Edward Scholten (born April 3, 1928) traveled first class into the arms of his Lord and Savior on December 15, 2018. He was surrounded by family. Herman is survived by Helen, his wife of 69 years, brother, Edward Scholten, and children, Linda (Jim) Morrow, Carole (Arend) Vander Pols, Janice and Allen Myers, and grandchildren Kristen (Jeremy) Gifford, Michael (Stephanie) Myers, Rebecca (Christopher Mortensen) Myers, Nickolas (Christina) Morrow, William Vander Pols, five great grandsons, and one great granddaughter. Two sons, William and Brian Scholten, preceded him in death. Herman served in the US Army during WWII.  He was an avid Great Lakes fisherman and captain of several boats. He was chairman of the board of Community Christian Ministries Foundation and involved in many other charitable causes. Herman was a builder and general contractor, responsible for many projects in the West Michigan area as well as in Nigeria, Liberia, and Guam where he and Helen served as missionaries for the Christian Reformed Church. He was very proud of the construction and later addition of First Cutlerville Church in Cutlerville, Michigan, where he was a lifelong member. But he was most proud of the house he constructed in 1949. He lived there for much of his life and always liked to remind everyone who would listen that he dug the basement with a team of horses. Memorial contributions can be made in Herman's name to Resonate Global Mission (formerly Christian Reformed World Missions). Funeral Services will be held 11:00 am Wednesday, December 19, at First Cutlerville Christian Reformed Church, 1425 68th Street, SW; with Reverends Kenneth VanWyk and Douglas Kamstra officiating. Interment in Winchester Cemetery. The family will greet visitors on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home and on Wednesday from 10 to 11 am at the church.
