David Clark Porter, age 61, entered into the presence of his Lord and Savior on Monday, October 29, 2018, after a courageous fifteen-year battle with brain cancer. David was born May 23, 1957 in Youngstown, Ohio to Donald and Barbara Porter, and has resided in Alto, MI for the past 28 years.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Deborah Hulbert Porter of Alto; son, Timothy of Phoenix, AZ; daughter, Susan of Kalamazoo, MI; father Donald Porter of Murfreesboro, TN; sisters, Cindi & Mark Sigmon of Atlanta, GA and Sharon & David Stanczak of Murfreesboro, TN; brother, Kenneth Porter of Grand Rapids, MI; father and mother-in-law, Henry & Emaline Hulbert of Alto, MI; brothers and sisters-in-law, David & Diana Hulbert of Zephyr Hills, FL; Donald & Charlene Hulbert of Alto, MI; Dale Hulbert of Wyoming, MI; Dennis & Karin Hulbert of Alto, MI and Hank & Kimberly Hulbert of Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by many cousins, nieces and nephews, and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Porter.

David’s passion and zeal for sharing the gospel to everyone he encountered was evident to all that knew him. He used any situation or location as a tool for telling people about the saving grace of Jesus Christ. This passion has taken him across America and to several foreign countries, traveling countless miles as an evangelist preaching the Gospel. In the early years of his ministry he smuggled Bibles and other Christian literature past the former “Iron Curtain” to the spiritually-starved people living in Communist nations. He also spent time away from evangelism while pastoring several churches in West Michigan. For over 44 years, he preached regularly at the Mel Trotter Mission, reaching the homeless in Grand Rapids.

David is a living testimony to the miracle-working power of the God he has faithfully served. When diagnosed in 2004 with a cancerous brain tumor, the prognosis was dim. If he survived surgery, he would more than likely have limited brain functions for the remainder of his life. The Great Physician had a different plan! Even throughout treatment for the original tumor, Dave continued to preach the gospel, and suffered very few effects after his brain surgery. Although he has been unable to preach during 2018, he has remained faithful to his Savior, with his loving wife always at his side, praising Him even in the midst of not understanding the why’s and when’s of his terrible disease. He has now been completely healed and is in the presence of Jesus. II Timothy 4:7-8 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: henceforth, there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness which the Lord, the righteous Judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love His appearing.”

Visitation will be at Stroo Funeral Home, 1095 68th St SE, Grand Rapids, MI on Thursday, November 1, 2018 from 6 to 9 pm. The funeral service celebrating David’s faith in Jesus Christ will be on Friday, November 2, at Grand Rapids Baptist Church, 4525 Stauffer Ave SE, Grand Rapids, MI at 12:00 pm, with visitation at 11:00 am. Pastors David Iseminger II of Ionia, MI, Bart Spencer of Holland MI and Brian McMath of Espanola, NM will be officiating. A private family burial will take place at the Bowne Mennonite Cemetery in Alto, MI.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mission Fund at Lincoln Avenue Baptist Church, 345 E. Lincoln Ave, Ionia, MI 48846.

Brother Dave was a close friend who knew what he was called to do,tell just about everyone he came in contact with about his Saviour,he was one who now can quote the scriptures he learned as a youth without hesitation or stuttering because he no longer is in the old body. I will miss my friend but only for a short while. Love and prayers for Debbie and family.
