Lt. Colonel Muriel Joy (Payton) Hull, age 86 was born February 15, 1932 in St. Paul, MN to then-Captain and Mrs. Wm. Herbert (Ivy Broome) Payton. She was the sixth of nine children and the first to be born in the United States. She passed peacefully into the presence of the Lord on Sunday, August 12, 2018 in Forsyth, MO.
Muriel accepted Christ as her Savior as a music camper at Echo Grove in 1945 and was enrolled as a Senior Soldier in 1947. As an officer’s child, she was involved in many aspects of corps ministry including band, songsters, Girl Guards, Corps Cadets, and YPL.
As a student at Asbury College (where she graduated as the salutatorian), Muriel met the love of her life, farm boy, Larry Hull. She introduced him to The Salvation Army and they married on September 17, 1954 at the Port Huron, MI Corps. Following their graduation, they served as teachers for four years in the Muskegon, MI area, where Stephen joined the family in 1957.
They entered the School for Officers’ Training in Chicago in 1959 as Great Hearts (the final one-year session in the Central Territory), and were commissioned in 1960 as the Corps Officers in Cadillac, MI, where Bethany arrived the following year.
Both Muriel and Larry received a calling to officership and missionary service while they were students and were pleased to be appointed for overseas ministry in Zambia, Africa in 1963. Rhonda was born while they were stationed there in 1965.
The Hulls returned to the United States in 1968 and took up responsibilities at the School for Officers’ Training, followed by divisional appointments in Eastern Michigan, Unified Command, and Midland. They returned to the SFOT and served in the curriculum department for 5 years, then to Eastern Michigan and Territorial Headquarters. Their final appointment was at the College for Officer Training where Muriel served as the Director of Campus Services until her retirement in 1998.
They made their retirement home in the Grand Rapids, MI area and attended the Fulton Heights Corps, where Muriel participated in the Home League and songsters. She assisted Larry in his special ministry to the men from the Adult Rehabilitation Center by encouraging them and welcoming them into their home for beautifully appointed luncheons and dinners.
Muriel was known for her attention to detail, her hospitality, and her oatmeal raisin cookies. She had a brilliant mind and a love for music. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.
Lt. Colonel Muriel Hull was preceded in death by her parents, Brigadiers Herb and Ivy Payton, her brothers, Orville (Betty) and Donald Payton, her sisters Beulah (Joe) Craig and Elizabeth Budry.
