Marissa Leigh (Freyling) Stevens, age 29, of Caledonia, went to be with her risen Lord and Savior on Monday, April 2, 2018. She will always be remembered by the vibrancy in her beautiful smile, her quick humor, and her down-to-earth personality. When meeting her, one could tell she was wise beyond her years and always chose joy - taking delight in the small things no matter what life presented. For five short months she treasured being Jason’s wife where she was remembered for her amazing cooking, her devotion, and sharing in the unconditional love they had for each other. Marissa had a genuine passion for investing in others as she poured her life into relationships, living a life of service. It was this service that called her into pursuing a career in counseling where she was trained from life experiences and an education that allowed her to provide wise advice to those seeking godly insight or a fresh outlook on life. She was also passionate to combine her love of people and animals by devoting her time and energy at Equest Center for Therapeutic Riding. It was evident Marissa grew and lived her faith, sharing it with all she encountered. Despite three separate journeys with cancer, a bone marrow transplant, kidney transplant, and many other health trials, Marissa fought a good fight, finished the race, maintained an outlook of positivity and grace, cherished the simplest of moments, and most importantly kept an unwavering faith - knowing this earthly life would not be her eternal home. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Ray and Helen Freyling, Jerry Stevens, Terry Kloostra; and aunt, Sherri Kueppers. Marissa will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Jason; her parents, Dean and Marcy Freyling; sister, Mikayla Freyling; father-in-law, David Stevens; mother-in-law, Terri Stevens; sisters-in-law, Audra Stevens, Brooke Stevens (Nick Lindrup), Courtney (Zac) VanDuinen, Danielle Stevens; niece, Freya VanDuinen; grandparents, John and Donna Grassmid, Alta Stevens, Jan Kloostra; many uncles, aunts, cousins, and special friends, especially Celeste Ryan. Celeste’s life-sustaining gifts allowed Marissa to experience fifteen more precious years of life here on earth. The family will greet visitors on Sunday, April 8, from 1:30 - 4 and 5 - 8 pm at Stroo Funeral Home, and Monday, April 9, from 10 - 10:45 am at Forest Hills Baptist Church, 3900 E. Fulton St., where the service will begin at 11 am. Pastor Craig Perry will officiate. Private interment will be at Alaska Cemetery. Contributions in memory of Marissa may be made to Equest Center for Therapeutic Riding, 3777 Rector Ave. NE, Rockford, MI 49341.

To the family of Marissa,

I met Marissa, Marcy and Donna on the pediatric oncology floor at Butterworth some 15 years ago as both of our daughters began their cancer journeys. Marissa was inspiring, a fighter and a person of faith, the whole family was kind and caring. Grandma Grasmid made Laura many "ostrich" picture cards, as she loved ostrich's and I still have them today. I always wondered about how Marissa was doing and what she had become? So sorry for your loss as I read the obituaries on Thursday evening just four days to late.......anot her angel in heaven.....

Sincerely Wendy Sakoski
