David Randall (Randy) Gabrielse, age 49, of Grand Rapids, MI, left to join the Lord on Saturday, April 15, 2017, after a 16 month battle with a brain tumor.  Randy was born on February 8, 1968 in Mt. Clemens, MI, the oldest son of David and Judy Gabrielse. He married Karen Kay Gilliland on October 28, 2000. He is survived by his wife, Karen; his mother, Judy; grandmother, Cornelia Gabrielse; four brothers, Greg (Carrie), Kevin (Karen), Dan (Beth), Steve; as well as six nieces and one nephew. After surviving childhood leukemia, Randy became an avid reader, bicyclist and runner. While a student at Calvin College, Randy was a member of the cross country team. The Randy Gabrielse Perseverance Award was created in honor of his work ethic and is now awarded annually. At Calvin, Randy majored in history in 1989, and then went on to complete a masters and doctorate in US History at Michigan State University in 2002. In 2016, Randy completed a Certificate in Urban Ministry from Western Theological Seminary, Holland, MI. Randy served as a CRC campus minister at Iowa State from 2004-2009. As a result of his experiences in Iowa, Randy's love for Creation Care and gardening became a real passion. He worked to help others in the struggle with what it means to be a faithful steward in God's world and advocated for local food. After moving back to Grand Rapids in 2009, Randy began doing more urban ministry work - working to help those on the margins to develop resources and relationships. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 29, at 11 am at Eastern Ave. CRC (514 Eastern Ave. SE, Grand Rapids, Mi 49503). Visitation will also be at Eastern Ave. CRC on Friday, April 28, from 1-3 pm and 5-8 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts can be made to Mary Free Bed-Bikes for the Rest of Us or CORR (Congregations Organizing for Racial Reconciliation). Arrangements by:

Dear Gabrielse family, Randy is HOME!! Praising the Lord and biking with his Dad....what a beautiful picture. Remembering when Randy was in second grade with our class and coming to visit him during his leukemia battle. Smart cookie this young man was that he left us in the dust and moved on two grades and passed us up to graduate an entire year before the rest of us. So humbled to have God cross our paths again over the past few years. Praying for each of you as you grieve and ask that you hold on to the hope and knowledge that this was not goodbye, but a see you later. Love each of you.
